 ORGANIZED 1905

For approximately two decades a Sunday School and preaching services were held in the afternoon at the Buffalo Wallow Schoolhouse, a one room building near Chucky Pike.  In the fall of 1904, Geo. Zirkle, a Sunday School teacher & member of Mt. Horeb Presbyterian suggested that the people, mostly of the Baptist faith organize into a church.  In July 22, 1905 the people presented a constitution for Buffalo Grove Baptist Church.  A month later J.A. Lockhart was called aas pastor.  The first item of business was to build a church building.  A nearby sawmill prepared the donated timber and local men donated their labor.  The new building was dedicated Nov. 1, 1908.  The first minister ordained was Glenmore Garrett. Sr.  The church has been served by 29 pastors and 17 of them have been students of Carson Newman.  One pastor W.H. Fitzgerald & wife served as a missionaries to the Cherokee Indians in NC for the Home Mission Board.  In 1977 the Sanctuary & Educational building was brick-veneered which is a credit for both the church and the denomination.  (Data & information from Milestone sixty: History of the Jefferson County Baptist Association 1919-1978 , Glen A. Toomey.1978.
