ORGANIZED 1786 (LOWER FRENCH BROAD)

The First Bapthist Church of Dandridge, the oldest Baptist Church in Jefferson County is the third oldest church in Tennessee with continous existence and cooperation with Baptist Associations. The church was organized as the Lower French Broad Baptist Church on March 25, 1786, three miles northeast of Dandridge in Coon's School House by Rev. Jonathan Mulkey & Rev. Isaac Barton. They met with six other churches in the fall of 1786 and organized the Holston Association of Baptist, the first in Tennessee. They became a charter member of the Tennessee Association in 1802. The church transferred to the Nolachucky Association in 1872. The church has all of their records from 1786 till today....these are the oldest both political and religious in Jefferson County. First has mothered three churches: Dumplin/1797; Antioch/1813; & French Broad/1887. The church has been faithfully led by 25 pastors with it's first Duke Kimbrough serving for over fifty years.....a record!
