ORGANIZED 1797

The Dumplin Baptist Church, the third oldest church in the eastern half of Tennessee with continuous existence at the same place, under the same name, was organized July 29, 1797. John Cate, Sr petitioned for a new church to be constituted near his home in Dec. 1794; Nothing happened. He again petitioned June of 1797 and it was approved. Thus, several families , who were members of French Broad Baptist Church (now Dandridge First) joined to organize the new church (four males and seventeen females). Dumplin joined Tennessee's only Baptist Association, Holston, the next month. Later she became a charter member of the Tennessee Association (1802) and in Jefferson County (1919). Duke Kimbrough was their first pastor. The Dumplin church was a leader in all three associations set an example for other to follow. Between 1839 and 1859 over 500 were baptized into their fellowship. Dumplin, having a strong missionary bent, has given birth to over six churches: Rocky Valley/1833; Piedmont/1891; Deep Sprints/1895; Shady Grove/1880; Snyder's Chapel/1903 and French Broad in Sevier County/1893.
