ORGANIZED 1888

The Flat Gap Baptist Church organized Feb.12, 1888 and was named Allena Baptist Church for the first fifteen months. Allena was the name of the Post Office. The church grew from a Sunday School meeting in the Caldwell School House. The church joined the Tennessee Association (Knox County now) in 1889, transferring to the Nolachucky Association in 1893. The first pastor was W.M. Witt. The land given for the church was two acres and a 32 by 50 building was erected. In 1949 the educational building was begun and the dedication program for the building was April 15, 1951. The brick pastorium, next door to the church, was built and occupied in 1959. Flat Gap is proud that eleven young men of their membership have answered the call into the ministry. The church has been fairhfully served by twenty pastors.
